Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the factors
affecting the attrition of accounting students in Oyo State
Secondary Schools. Applying his long teaching experience
as an accounting teacher, the researcher, traced the background
of the problem to the early and formal business
education programme in the defunct Western Region.
Six null hypotheses were postulated based on the
researcher's observation of the rate of enrolment in
accounting in two-sampled schools - one in a city and the
other in a rural area. using 20 selected secondary schools
on the basis of their strategic location, the study took
389 samples from all class five students who enrolled
during 1985/86 for West African School Certificate
Examinations (WASCE). Those who have dropped accounting
formed the experimental group while those stayers were
noted as the control group.
Among the main factors comprising 32 variables and
subvariables, six factors emerged significant within 0.05
level having employed Chi-Square for the statistical
analysis. They were, academic background in Accounting;
academic aspirations; parent-guardian-counselling; teacher's
attitude; his availability, and school library conditions.
Suggestions were offered ranging from the provision of
sound background knowledge in accounting; the employment
of stable, trained and qualified accounting teachers; the
establishment of curriculum planning committee for business
subjects and co-operative education and supplying suitable
vii
teaching aids. It is also recommended that itinerant
career guidance counsellor programme should be established
in the state secondary schools. The study finally
recommended similar research in the office education
subjects such as shorthand and typewriting.
