Abstract
The study was carried out to investigate the nature
and mode of inheritance of bacterial blight resistance in
cotton; to examine environmental variation, if any, for
resistance to bacterial blight and the relationship
between resistance at the cotyledon stage with that at
the true-leaf stage. The variety S295 was crossed with
seven other varieties: TX-CDP37HH-1-83, TAMCOT SP21S,
TAMCOT-CAMD-E; SAMCOT-9, SAMCOT-10, SAMCOT-6 and SAMCOT-
8. The parents and their crosses were wound-inoculated
in the field at three locations and in the screenhouse
with separate bacterial suspensions of isolates 1, 2 and
a 1:1 mixture of isolates 1 and 2. Disease reaction was
evaluated on a scale of 1-10. Disease grades frequency ,
distributions indicated a single gene with complete
dominance for resistance to the two isolates. The
analysis of variance indicated highly significant
differences among populations and locations. The
interaction between populations x locations was also
significant. The significance of the interactions
between isolates x locations and populations x isolates
x locations, indicated that for future screening and
testing, materials should be evaluated across several
environments and with different isolates. The-'
correlation between cotyledon and true-leaf disease
grades and phenotypic ratios indicated that resistance
was controlled by the same genetic mechanism at both
plant stages
