dc.description.abstract"Northern Grandeur" is an experimental painting project based on the patterns and motifs of some decorative arts of "Northern Nigeria" . This stylistic study derived its characteristic feature from the decorative patterns and motifs of some decorative arts which include Calabash decoration, Embroidery, Basketry, Leather/Horse trappings decoration and Wall decoration. The study developed an approach in which traditional forms and designs are integrated with modern or contemporary experimental painting forms and techniques* The objective is to provide an awareness of the creative potentials, design resources and artistic wealth of the Nigerian environment. This, the researcher hope, may inspire younger generation of the possibilities that exist in the use and integration of traditional forms with contemporary western oriented styles taught in Nigerian art schools. Data was collected through four sources: 1. Direct purchase of the decorative arts; 2. Photographic documentation; 3. Free hand drawing based on personal observation and direct visual study of the decorative arts; 4. Personal interviews with the craftsmen and designers in the field. Data collected were analysed and discussed for the production of experimental paintings which formed the art works exhibited as the major requirement for the M.F.A. examination. V • Featuring prominently in the exhibition are the varieties of Northern decorative patterns and motifs expressed in various t r a d i t i o n a l and experimental methods and techniques of painting. In conclusion the researcher suggested that experimental art works of t h i s type ought to be much more vigorously encouraged in contemporary Nigerian art schools and colleges. Efforts should be geared towards the study and use of t r a d i - t i o n a l forms and local materials in Nigerian schools of a r t.en_US
