Abstract
This study investigates the effect of mobile telecommunication on the economic activities in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The problem of study is to examine how the advent of mobile phones has improved the scope of business transactions, how it has helped to improve inter-relationship between the sellers and the buyers and how the various attributes of the people, and their location (rural or urban) influence their use of GSM in transacting business in Kabba-Bunu LGA of Kogi State. The specific objectives of the study are to: identify the various ways the people of Kabba-Bunu LGA, carried out their business transactions over space before the advent of mobile telecommunication in the area; assess the differential effects of gender, level of education, type and location of business on the effectiveness of use of mobile telecommunication in business transactions and examine the constraints to the effective use of mobile telecommunication in business transactions in the study area. The Data were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Ten (10) settlements were purposively selected across the Local Government Area to form the sample points while a total number of 384 copies of questionnaires were administered. The questionnaires were based on issues such as bio-data of the respondents, the type and location of business, how the respondents were carrying out their business before the advent of mobile telephone, the various problems faced then, the year they started using GSM and the various ways GSM has made business easier and better for them. The study reveals that before the advent of mobile telecommunication, the people of Kabba-Bunu LGA were taking their wares personally to their customers majorly. The study equally reveals that more males are into business than the females in the study area and that higher percentage of the males are more educated as compared to the females, and the more educated the people, the more they made use of mobile telephones for their businesses. Moreso, the people in the urban center make use of mobile telephones more than those in the rural areas for the purpose of running their businesses. The result also shows that the advent of mobile phone has greatly influenced business transactions positively in the local government area. However, certain constraints were discovered in the usage of mobile telephone for the running of business in the study area. These are: fluctuations in network services, high cost of recharging and incessant power failure by the Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria. The study equally reveals the willingness of the people to improve upon their usage of mobile telecommunication for the purpose of running their businesses. ANOVA was used to test the relationship between gender, level of education, type and location of business, and the effective usage of GSM. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the various service providers should improve on their various services in t the study area, the government should equally help with better power supply in the study area and finally, efforts should be made by both network providers and the government to subsidize the tariffs charged on mobile telecommunication subscribers.
