Abstract
This study investigated the socio-economic factors
affecting farmers' adoption of cowpea production technologies
in Iwo Local Government Areas of Osun State. The objectives
of the study were to:
i. identify the socio-economic characteristics of farmers in
the study area;
ii. determine the level of farmers' awareness and adoption of
recommended cowpea production technologies in the area;
iii. determine those factors related to farmers adoption of
the technologies; and
iv. draw conclusions from the findings and make
recommendations on how to improve on the existing level
of adoption of recommended cowpea production technologies
in the area.
Field survey on 103 farmers was analysed using
descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation
Coefficient and stepwise regression analysis. Results of
analysis showed that Iwo Local Government peasant farmers are
typically full-time farmers, about 51 years old. They are
literate with an average farm size of about 2 ha and they own
their land directly through inheritance as well as purchase.
About half of farmers were aware of the recommended
technologies. However, the farmers adoption level was
relatively low.
Results of correlation analysis also showed that socioeconomic
characteristics, such as labour availability,
cooperative membership, credit availability, farming
experience, practicing of additional occupation, extension
contact, farm size and age were significantly related to
adoption of the technologies at 0.05 level. On the other
hand, tenure status and level of formal education, even though
related to adoption, are not significant. A further analysis,
using stepwise regression procedures, reveals that these
variables taken together explained about 42% of the
variability in adoption behaviour with labour availability and
cooperative membership making the greatest contribution.
It was recommended that more input distribution centres
be sited in strategic areas. It was also advised that an
effective campaign be mounted to educate farmers on the
advantages of improved technologies. Incentives, subsidies
and credit facilities should be provided to the farmers to
enable them purchase needed farm inputs necessary for adoption
of new technologies.
