Abstract
Over sixty percent of a bank earning is derived from the interplay of activities surrounding its loans and advances portfolio. The quality of these on their balance sheets over time portrays the growth and health of the bank. An abuse on this very important source of earning has been responsible for the collapse of financial institution that hitherto have been considered to be very vibrant. It is very important that such financial institution put in place structures that will protect expositors funds and avoid the lost of confidence in the system. They should also be seen to play their secondary role as channel through which government execute its monetary policies. These concern prompted this study which has been able to reveal that good credit administration in banks is a very essential requirement in lending business and that bad and doubtful debt on the balance sheets of a bank can greatly reduced through the use of will trailed credit officers who are versed in this aspect and loans go bad as a result of unforeseeable factors, it could be recovered if security was well constituted. The bank we have narrowed our study on has continued to grow with time. The secret about their success story has been revealed by the study lies on the solid credit framework under which they have established and adhere religiously to. The findings in this research work therefore are to serve as a safe highway on which other banks will drive to prosperity.
