Abstract
Modern society is becoming more technological in nature. Its needs are being met
by an industry that is highly technical at a time when the delay lag between
scientific discovery and technical implementation of the result of scientific
research is diminishing. Today, we are being deluged with and absorbing the
fruits of science and technology.
The demands, inventiveness, and consumption of the industrial society react
heavily with a service industry such as construction. Consequently, a bewildering
array of construction projects, activities, and operations exists todaiy, this array
calls for the continuous development of new construction methods and new
management approaches. Each new demand and situation requires the design and
specification of new construction operation and management system, or the
adaptation of existing methods to specify the new problems.
In project management, a model has been used in one form or another to specify
what is to be done and in what order to achieve the project objectives. Network
scheduling models are one of the latest applications of this useful tool to produce
models for planning, scheduling, monitoring, and controlling of the projects. The
application potential of this models in the management of building projects show
that, the project can be carried out more efficiently and economically than might
be expected.
The emphasis of this thesis is to highlight the importance of the network
scheduling models as planning and controlling method in building projects, and

the impact of their application in the top management and project management
level in construction companies in Nigeria.
In this regard, the thesis work can be divided into two main parts. Part one will
focus on the research in the literature which include the concert of model in
management, different type of models, models in building projects, the general
aspects of planning and controlling, and their application in building projects.
Part two concern with the research on the application of network: scheduling
models in building projects, and all factors affecting the adaptation and
application of the techniques in building projects in general, and in Nigerian
construction companies in particular.
