PINFLUENCE OF MOTHERS’ EMPLOYMENT STATUS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN PLATEAU STATE

Abstract
The study on the influence of mothers’ employment status on the Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School Two Students of Plateau State, was carried out in order to investigate the influence of the academic performance of employed and unemployed mothers’ children and to determine the influence on types of employment status of mothers on the academic performance of their children in Plateau State. The specific objectives of the study were to compare the academic performance of the students, examination results of mathematics and English were used. To also establish the influence on the number of hours employed mothers spend with their children on their academic work. Four research questions and four null hypotheses in line with the research objectives were formulated. One of them is; what is the difference between the academic performance of employed and unemployed mothers’ children. A survey research design was used with a population of 3,105 and a sample size of 600 from the three senatorial zones as follows; Jos-South, Langtang North, Mangu. Two hundred and eight employed mothers, three hundred and six unemployed mothers. The analysis showed that significant difference exist in the academic performance of children, of employed mothers and unemployed mothers. The academic performances of children of employed and unemployed mothers were 64.1798 and 53.2190 respectively. The opinion of employed and unemployed mothers on the influence of types of employment status on the academic performance of their children showed that both groups of women agreed that full employment status of mothers adversely affects mother and child relationship which retards the child’s academic performance. It was concluded that mothers should be should be more involved in their children’s academic performance not only checking their books but providing them with all school materials like textbooks, notebooks and employ qualified lesson teachers for them in each subject area. The study recommends among others that mothers who are unemployed should strive to have something doing to have small income to complement in buying textbooks and other school materials for their children’s academics.
