Abstract
This research takes a broad view of rural infrastructure in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. The aim is to identify the types and quantity of rural infrastructures, their spatial distribution, the condition, as well as and the maintenance of the infrastructural facilities so identified in the study area. The study made use of primary data collected from personal inspections, inventory development and questionnaire administration. Sixteen communities were purposive selected for this study. The descriptive statistical techniques involving calculation of frequency, percentages and table were adopted to summarize the data collected. Also, a Standardized scores (Z-Score) was employed to analyzed the variation in the spatial distribution of the rural infrastructures. The study identified ten rural infrastructural facilities that cut across physical, social and institutional spheres. Besides, there is an over concentration of infrastructural facilities in the more accessible communities of the study area while the predominantly rural parts of the local government are disadvantaged. The Z-score results show that while K/Magani was found to be most advantaged district, Ungwan-Aku was discovered highly disadvantaged. A good number of the infrastructures identified were found functional majorly as a result of efforts of the communities’ dwellers. However, the major challenge facing these infrastructures in the study area is inaccessibility. The study therefore recommends increased discriminatory investment in the provision of essential infrastructural facilities in favour of lagging and under-privileged areas with a bid to encourage a fair and just distribution of the facilities over space. Moreover, government should encourage communal self-help projects such that communities that embarked upon road construction, building of schools, health centres, dam construction, building town halls, and ultra-modern markets will be given some technical and financial assistance by the government. By so doing, they will no longer be dependent on government to do all things but also communities will be seen as partners in progress.
