This study is an analyses of the achievement of candidates in the West African School Certificate English Language examination for a period of five years (1981-1985). The study focused on selected Secondary Schools in Sokoto State that attempted the English Language examination within the period under study. The purpose of the study was to establish if there was relationship between sex, proprietorship location and student achievement in this examination. To achieve the goal of the study, the examination results of the candidates from the selected schools in the period under study were collected. The results were analysed at 5$ level of significance using the Z test statistic. For each variable also, results of candidates with credit passes (1-6) and those with overall passes (1-8) were analysed separately. The former category has met one of the requirements for entry into Nigerian Universities while the latter has not. vii The results of the analyses indicated the location of a school whether rural or urban, the sex of the candidate whether male or female, does not have any significant relationship on student achievement in the English Language examination. The proprietorship variable was however different. It emerged as the only variable that has any significant influence on student achievement. This analysis reflects the achievement of Federal Government College candidates over their state counterpart's. In view of the findings, the researcher would like to suggest that the Sokoto State Government continues to improve the management aspect of its schools in both urban and rural areas since the research study shows that the achievement of students in both rural and urban schools does not differ much. However, there is the need to point out that the results in both rural and urban schools were poor very much unlike the results of the Federal Government College Students. Sokoto State should therefore help facilitate the achievement of its students by playing its management role effectively.en_US
