dc.description.abstractThis thesis report is primarily to explain bow some ancillary facilities can up lift the solemn atmosphere which exists around the galleries to day in our museums and which makes them u n p o p u l ar generally, but before a c t u a l l y accomplishing t h i s t a s k , the r e s e a r c h e r had to shed as much l i g h t as p o s s i b l e on v i r t u a l ly every a s p e c t of t h e word museum. The f i r s t four c h a p t e r s Mere d e d i c a t e d e x h a u s t i v e l y to f i r s t l y i n t r o d u c t o r y w r i t e ups l i k e d e f i n i n g t h e problem, s t a t i ng t h e aim and o b j e c t i v e s and e x p l a i n i n g t h e museum concept - i t s evolvement and development u s i n g examples from a l l over t h e -world and s p e c i f i c d e t a i l s about museum a d m i n i s t r a t i o n such as s a l i e nt p o i n t s to consider in a r r a n g i n g e x h i b i t i o n s , control of the a d m i t t a n c e of c l i m a t i c elements i n t o t i e g a l l e r i e s and t h e ir e f f e c t s , contemporary r o l e s expected of museums today l i k e t he duty to educate and e n t e r t a i n the p u b l i c i n t h e i r own way. Chapter f i v e summarises t h e major c u l t u r a l groups under which a r t e f a c t s a r e displayed in N i g e r i a n museums and a l s o e x p l a i ns about the people of Benue - t h e i r o r i g i n , cultural c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s , and demographic data. Chapter s i x d e a l s with t h e primary aim of t h i s study and chapter seven a n a l y s e s four c a s e s t u d i e s , two l o c a l and two forego t a k i n g n o t e of t h e ir a p p r a i s a l s . The l a s t four c h a p t e r s a r e wholly concerned with t h e design work, so they i n d i v i d u a l l y . , d i s c u s s t h e s i t e for the proposed d e s i g n , the design p r o c e s s , the design r e p o r t which e x p l a i n s t he d e s i g n a l r e a d y done and f i n a l l y general c o n c l u s i o n s a r r i v e d a t. vii The researcher hopes this thesis report has contributed architecturally by proposing a possible architectural solution to a major problem experienced by most museums not only in t h is country, but globally - that of attracting a greater public patronage of their galleries.en_US
