Abstract
ABSTRACT This study was aimed at finding out oho effectiveness of career guidance programme on the various aspects of career awareness of junior secondary three students in Kaduna metropolis. Two schools wore used for the study. The study design is an experimental in nature, A simple size of seventy-two students were involved, thirty-six from each school was used for the study. Purposeful sampling technique was employed to select and assigned respondents to the control and treated groups, A self developed and validated instrument in the career Awareness Rating Scale (CARS) was used to collect the data for the study. The instrument develop covered the seven components of Career Awareness namely: Career Awareness, Attitude and Appreciation, Decision-Making, Educational, Economic, Skills and Self-Awareness which were the be sis for the Seven null hypotheses and research questions. The focus of the hypotheses was to test the level of career awareness of the students before and after the career guidance programme Given. The main statistical tool applied for testing the hypotheses was a t-test statistic. It was found that Junior Secondary Three Students in Government Schools differ significantly in the level of career awareness. It then implies that career guidance programme if. effectively planned i vii and provided helps to influence students career awareness i level. Results oT findings indicated that: 1. Relevant learning experiences and career awareness activities if effectively guided, supported with usable information materials help to improve the career awareness of junior secondary three students. 2. By providing effective career guidance, students, have the capacity to link what they learn at school (calss) with what is obtained and exist in the world of work* 3. Knowledge of various careers aid in decision making process and subsequent job satisfaction. Recommendations based on the findings include:- 1. Counsellors should assist students to become aware that every occupation demands a level of knowledge, skills and interest which help students to plan choose and succeed in life. 2. Counsellors to provide relevant and usable information materials and sources to students and guide them on how to use them. 3. Counsellors should not relent in their efforts to organise regular career guidance programmes ns a way of linking them (students) with the various occupations existing, their availability, hazards and prospects. ' 4. Counsellors to plan the programme on a continuous basis to enhance awareness on the various careers existing.
