dc.description.abstract | Equipment Leasing is a recent development in Nigeria. However, its rate of growth and acceptance as an alternative form of business financing under the Structural Adjustment Programme is great. This is so, due to rapid economic changes in the country, which results to high cost of machinery and equipment and liquidity squeeze. With the recent explosion in the banking and finance industry in the country, equipment leasing has began to catch on especially with the multinational companies and some indigenous growing ones. The fundamental changes in the economy brought about by the introduction of Strutural Adjustment Programme created a lot of opportunities and constraints to equipment lease financing in the country. Lease financing has now become an attractive means of acquisition and use of fixed assets such as land, buildings, plants and equipment. The attraction of leasing is heightened by the very high cost of fixed assets and the scarcity of foreign exchange to pay for imports. As a non-conventional way of creating funds for capital acquisition, equipment lease financing spreads across to different sectors of the economy, mainly manufacturing, agricultural, construction, distributive and service industries. Therefore, equipment lease - xi - - xii - financing tends to analyse the lessor - lessee relationship in respect to the type of contractual agreement they entered. The equipment leasing industry under the harsh economic environment created by the Structural Adjustment Programme has a lot of prospects in the future and with time it will play a vital role in financing key projects in the country. | en_US |
