N AS; A MEDIUM FOR COMMUNICATING ABSTRACT CONCEPTS The purpose of this study was to explore the use of animation art as a medium for communicating abstract concepts so that such concepts could be easily understood by a wide range of audience. An understanding of the internal process of the disease measles was used as an example of abstract concepts. Two procedures were used in collecting the required information for this project. First, lectures were attended with the microbiology students to grasp the knowledge about measles pathogenesis. Lectures were also attended to understand how to communicate with illustrations with special reference to animation art. Information were gathered from the 'NETC1 Kaduna where the machine for preparing animation was avaiable. Pictures of the development of measles in their various stages were shot in hospitals and in the local areas where measles patients were being attended to. The literature review on processes of meales replication was later translated to drawings by hand by the researcher to illustrate the measles particle in its various stages of development, and they were converted into slides later on. It was postulated that if this type of sequence helped to simplify the concept of measles, these illustrations could be effectively used for enlightening various groups of people about measles. That would be communicating through animation. The study has revealed many aspects of the measles disease such as its cause and severity; its endemic nature throughout the world and the unfounded superstition about it in Nigeria. The study has also shown that the internal processes could be illustrated and this could lead to a better understanding of the disease if animation art could be employed. But, the scarcity of equipment and materials and the cost of animation now in Nigeria are such that it has not been possible for the researcher to actually complete the process and field test the product Although evidence seems to lead to a belief that animation art would be an effective way of helping people to understand abstract concepts the chances of employing this medium for non commercial purpose in Nigeria are at the moment remote. In the developed countries, animation has been accepted as an effective instructional media for communicating concepts, especially abstract ones and are used in various institutions. This is not the case in Nigeria, and the use of illustrations and slides in the process of animation can very easily be incorporated into the learning processes of various institutions in Nigeria, with the exception of the institutions of the blind people.en_US
