Abstract
This study is an investigation of the Causes and
Effects of Juvenile Delinquency Among Youths of Madakiya
District, Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna
State, Nigeria.
The main objectives were to find out the causes of
juvenile delinquency, prevalent delinquent acts among the
youths; effects of juvenile delinquency on youths and
society; and suggest ways of checking the menace among
youths of Madakiya District.
In the research the following questions were raised
and answered:
a) What are the causes of juvenile delinquency among
youths of Madakiya District?
b) What are the types of Juvenile delinquency prevalent
among the youths and community of Madakiya District?
c) What are the effects of juvenile delinquency on the
youths in Madakiya and the entire Community of
Madakiya District?
d) How can the problem of Juvenile delinquency among
youths in Madakiya District be checked?
Four null hypotheses were stated and tested at 0.05
level of significance. The hypotheses were stated thus:
a) There is no significant difference between the
opinions of the male and those of the female
respondents on the causes of juvenile delinquency
among youths in Madakiya District.
b) There is no significant difference between opinions of
the youths and those of the adults on the prevalent
delinquent acts among youths in Madakiya District.
c) There is no significant difference between the
opinions of the youths and those of the adults on the
effects of delinquency on the youths of Madakiya
District.
d) There is no significant difference between opinions of
the males and those of the females on the ways to
check juvenile delinquency in Madakiya District.
The sample size of 280 respondents was randomly chosen
out of which 140 respondents were males and 140 respondents
were females.
The main instrument used for the study was a
questionnaire which was designed by the researcher. T Test
statistical tool was used to analyse the data. All the four
hypotheses stated in this study were retained because there
was no significant difference between the various opinions.
From the findings, the following major recommendations
are made;
1. Parents should live exemplary lives of truthfulness,
understanding, love and affection and loyalty. Parents
should teach their children about God and morals. Such
moral training goes a long way to help the children
accept the norms of the society in which they are
brought up.
2. The Government can help by creating more job
opportunities especially for the youths of Madakiya
District, so that they can engage themselves in
meaningful work. Being an agricultural community, the
introduction of mechanised farming could provide more
job opportunities to the youths of Madakiya District.
3. There should be social/recreational programmes like
games and sports activities. Seminars and debates to
help the youths utilise their leisure time more
meaningfully.
4. The country's educational system should be planned in
such way that right from the primary schools, the
children are gradually aware of their obligations to
the society.
