dc.description.abstractThe purpose of t h i s p r o j e c t is to develop problems and p r o b l e m - s o l v i n g s t r a t e g i c s for Senior Secondary School Mathematics and to sugqest t h e methods for t e a c h i n g p r o bl s o l v i n g at t h e Secondary School l e v e l. The study begins by r e v i e w i n g previous work o n : - p r o b l e m - s o l v i n g methods; how to set up a problem; easy and d i f f i c u l t problems; and e x p l o r e s f a c t o r s t h a t a f f e c t problem s o l v i n g . I n t h e f i r s t p a r t , procedures on s t r a t e g i e s of p r o b l e m - s o l v i n g : - i d e n t i f i e d p a t t e r n i n t e a c h i n g problem s o l v i n g , p r e s e n t a t i o n , a t t e n t i o n , o b s e r v a t i o n and e x p l o r a t i o n, c l a s s i f i c a t i o n , were t h e n d i s c u s s e d and f u r t h e r e x p l o r a t i on and g e n e r a l i z a t i o n s were enumerated. I n t h e second p a r t , problems of "Novelty" were p r e s e n t e d. The t e rm "Novelty" problem could be g e n e r a l i z e d to i n c l u de a b s t r a c t mathematical problems, or p u z z l e s , c u r i o s i t i e s and r e c r e a t i o n a l problems, r e q u i r i n g c r e a t i v i t y or o r i g i n a l i t y . These Novelty problems w i l l h o p e f u l l y shed more l i g h t on t h e c r e a t i v e a s p e c t of mathematics l e a r n i n g at t h e s e n i or s e c o n d a r y school l e v e l s . , Because of t h e importance of p r o b l e m - s o l v i n g in mathematics e x a m i n a t i o n s , a c o l l e c t i o n of secondary school mathematics is p r e s e n t e d. Finally, some suggestions for further research were made to test the suitability of each item in the unit. There is a need for further investigations to ascertain whether or not certain, or all items are appropriate to Nigerian students. Thirdly, a number of areas related to the general issue of the items in Nigeria would provide rewarding research experience and supply useful information.en_US
