Abstract
ABSTRACT Change in diet and especially the production of European type of sweets, soft drinks and chocolates has had an increasing adverse effect on dental health particularly among younger people. Hence it comes as no surprise that there is a rapidly growing demand for Dentists and Dental Clinics all over the country. Nigeria with a population of about 100 million, has only four Dental schools non of which is of a standard design, or has all the requirements of a standard dental school. All the schools are located in the Southern part of the country. Dental clinics attached to hospitals in the Northern Nigeria are all service rather than teaching oriented departments and the establishment of a Dental School in the Northern part of the country is long overdue, in order to redress the imbalance between North and South also to meet the rising service demand throughout the country. The initial size of the proposed school is based on an annual intake of between twenty and thirty students, whose course of study will last five years. The scope of the design include an Administrative block,Inception area, record stores and dispensary for patients, Diagnostic clinic four departments together with clinics and wards for the treatment of patients and demonstration, students training unit and Anci1]ary facilities. The thesis aims at, planning the whole school to provide possibilities for future expansion of most department and clinics. It also aims at having the ground floor designated mainly for patients, while the upper floor is reserved exclusively for staff and students. v i i . The design will be flexible to enable the University construct the new school in various phases according to p r i o r i t i e s . A court-yard, type of buildingis aimed at in solving many problems which are posed by technical and climatic d i f f i c u l t i e s , such as insufficient sunlight and ventilation as they are very important in the dental clinics and the court-yard will also be used to reduce long corridors. From the research and analysis carried out, I hope a standard school of Dentistry will be achieved
