Abstract
One of the most common characteristics of less-developed
countries is geographical. One aspect of the geographical
environment is the relationship between the amount of available
land that contains adequate resources to sustain a
viable economy and the population depending on it. Lack
of mineral and other natural resources which provide basis
for industrialisation is another factor. Where many lessdeveloped
countries possess minerals like iron ore, coal,
diamond, gas etc the human and capital resources to convert
these into development potentials become a problem.
It is therefore considered both as a challenge and
motivator to examine the problems and prospects of the
development of iron and steel industry in Nigeria as an
academic exercise. It is hoped that the findings of the
study will provide some useful information to readers and
organs of the Federal Government of Nigeria who are responsible
for making the establishment of a steel industry a
reality in Nigeria.
