Abstract
One of the most essential requirements for performance
excellence in competitive sports is the selection of the most suitable
sport for an individual on the basis of his peculiar characteristics.
Available research evidence indicates specific physical and
physiological characteristics favourable to certain sport. This research
was therefore conducted to determine and compare the physical,
physiological and anthropometric characteristics of track and field,
basketball, badminton, judo and soccer groups. To achieve the
purpose of this study, 15 athletes from each of the selected athletic
groups representing Ahmadu Bello University in the following group of
sports; track and field, basketball, badminton, judo and soccer were
selected at random. The athletes thus selected were tested in 20m
shuttles run for agility, 50m dash for speed, 12 minute run test to
estimate maximal oxygen up take, chest, abdomen and thigh skin folds
to determine percent body fat and lower and upper limb lengths. The
data thus collected were statically analyzed. Descriptive statistics of
mean, standard deviation and standard error, analysis of variance
(ANOVA) were used to see if there was any significant difference
among the five male groups of sports. The result revealed that the
basketball players were the tallest and heaviest and had longer limbs,
soccer players were the most agile and fastest, track athletes and
badminton groups had the highest leg explosive strength, whereas,
judo had the highest percent body fat. Maximal heart rate showed no
difference among the male groups. On the basis of these results, it was
recommended that selection to a particular sport should be based on
the physical, physiological and anthropometric characteristics.
