The lithostratigraphic successions of Campanian to Palaeocene around Ribado area comprises of Upper Fika Formation, Arowa Formation and Kerri-Kerri Formation. Field work was conducted where some sections were logged, sieve analysis and micropaleontological analysis of shales and clays from the study area were carried out, and sedimentary structures were observed. The Upper Fika Formation is poorly exposed with only 7m thick section was accessed from gypsum mining pit believed to have been deposited in prodeltaic environment. The Arowa Formation is made up of coarsening upward cycles, characterized by soft sediment deformational structures and carbonaceous shalessometimes associated withcoal seams at the base. It is made up of laminated, very fine to fine grained, moderately to well sorted, negatively skewed, leptokurtic-mesokurtic, bioturbated sandstones interbedded with clay and sometimes shales. The shale predominate the base of the formation and decreases towards the top as the sandstone proportion increases and predominate. An intraformational channel filling conglomerates with clasts of ferruginous sandstone was observed in the lower part of Arowa Formation. Two lithofacies associations were observed from Arowa Fomation in the study area; the lower part is shale dominated intercalating with fine-grained sandstone varying from a few millimeters to a few centimeters in thickness. Primary sedimentary structures in these interbedded sandstones are symmetrical and asymmetrical ripple marks while the upper part is dominated by Sandstone, sometimes laminated, fine to medium grained, bioturbated, white to grey intercalating with dark grey shales or clays. The Arowa Formation was deposited under deltaic condition. The Kerri-Kerri Formation in the studyarea is continental and characterized by interbedding of clay (kaolin) with medium grained sandstones– granulestone. A NW-SE trending fault was observed in the northwestern boundary of the study area.en_US
