Abstract
This study investigated Awareness of Plagiarism and its Consequences on Scholarly Publications of Academic
Staff in Federal Universities in Northern States of Nigeria. Four (4) research questions were raised which
include: The extent of awareness of what constitutes plagiarism by academic staff of federal universities in
Northern States of Nigeria, How plagiarism affects scholarly activities of academic staff in federal universities
in northern states of Nigeria, How plagiarism can be effectively curtailed among academic staff of Federal
Universities in Northern States of Nigeria. Survey research method was adopted. The population of the study
consist of 1,473 academic staff from the four (4) selected Federal Universities among which 441(30%) were
selected using stratified random sampling. The total number of respondents for the study was 304(69.2%).
Structured questionnaire were used to collect data for the study. The study discovered that a good number of
the respondents were aware of what constitutes plagiarism and only a few were not really sure of what
constitutes plagiarism, It was also observed that a large number of the academic staff were aware of the
consequences of plagiarism on both the plagiarist, academic activities and the institution they serve, yet the
rate of plagiarism is still on the increase. The study further revealed that to effectively curtail plagiarism there
is need to strictly enforce rules to check plagiarism and punish offenders depending on the level of offences. It
was revealed that majority of the respondents were not aware of any measures in place to curtail plagiarism in
their various institutions. It was recommended by the study that all institutions should have a written policy on
plagiarism and where it is available, it should be made known and accessible to everyone, it should be
displayed on the web pages of the institution, written as foot note in the school hand book, followed up by
sensitization programs such as workshops, seminars, lectures etc. Paper publishers, editors, lecturers and all
those who receive publications, supervise projects, thesis, dissertations and other research works should
properly scrutinize works submitted to them and ensure that proper references and citations are done were
necessary. The institutions should adopt the use of plagiarism detection software whereby all research works
will be run into the software to detect any act of plagiarism.
