Abstract
This study was an attempt to analyze the attitude of parents
towards western education in Itas-Gadau Local Government area of
Bauchi State. The researcher observed that, most parents do not want
to send their children to school, when they do so, they are
reluctant in ensuring punctuality. There is the probability that
some parents do not seem to know the importance of education. The
study therefore looks at the problems and suggested some solutions
that would be of importance to parents and the authority concerned
with the educational development not only in Itas-Gadau but also in
other places where this problems prevails.
Questionnaires were used to collect data from parents and data
collected from the respondents were analysed and correlated to find
out if independent variable correlates with the dependent
variables.
Three hypotheses were formulated to test whether there are
significant relationships between
(i) parents' occupation and their attitude towards western
education and
(i) parents' attitude on western education and Christian religion.
Also tested, was the significant relationships between parents'
attitude on early marriage and western education
vii
Findings of the study indicated that:
(1) Significant relationship exists between occupational attitude
of parents and their attitude towards western education.
(2) There is no significant relationship between parents' attitude
on western education and Christian religion.
(3) There is no significant relationship between parents' attitude
on early marriage and western education.
Based on these findings, some of the recommendations made
include:
1. Government should ensure free and compulsory education from
primary to post-primary levels to ensure 100% transition.
2. A task force committee must be formed on education at local
government, district, village and ward levels who will be
charged with the responsibility of pupils and students'
punctuality and that any pupil who secure admission into postprimary
school, the committee must ensure that such a child is
not withdrawn by his parents. The committee must also make a
termly progress report.
