dc.description.abstractA B S T R A C T The purpose o f t h i s s tudy was to compare th e a cademic achievement need o f Secondary S ch o o l a t h l e t e s and n o n - a t h l e t e s in Zaria E d u c a t io n a l Zone o f Kaduna S t a t e . The r e a s o n t h a t motivated the r e s e a r c h e r to unde r take t h i s s tu d y i s th e f a c t that school athletes are p e r c e i v e d by the p u b l i c as th o s e who cannot achieve a c a d em i c a l ly as much as t h e i r c o u n t e r p a r t , non-athletes. Mo d i f ied B a k a r e ' s (197 6) Academic Need Achievement S c a l e (ANAS) was a dmin i s t e r e d on 380 (190 a t h l e t e s and 190 nonathletes) selected from S en io r Secondary S ch o o l s t u d e n t s in Zaria Educational Zone of Kaduna S t a t e . Data on th e academic and athletic a chie v ement s of the s e l e c t e d s tu d e n t s were collected for the purpose of compar ison between a t h l e t e s and non-ath1etes. For the purpose o f t h i s s tu d y , the r e s e a r c h made us e o f the EX-POST FACTOR r e s e a r c h d e s i g n , hence the in f o rm a t i o n (data) required were a l r e a d y a v a i l a b l e a t the time t h i s investigation was conducted. Simple survey d e s i g n was implored to ascertain the number and s tan d a rd o f the e x i s t i n g facilities in the 19 sampled s c h o o l s in Z a r i a E d u c a t i o n a l Zone . The data collected were analyzed using a two - s amp let- t e s t to determine whether or not differences e x i s t e d between th e two groups, athletes and non-athletes. Pearson's P roduc t Moment Correlational Statistics was used to d e t e rmin e i f a s i g n i f i c a n t r e l a t i o n s h i p e x i s t e d between a t h l e t i c a chie v ement and academic a chievement o f Secondary S ch o o l a t h l e t e s . The l e v e l o f s i g n i f i c a n c e was s e t a t P < 0 . 0 5 . The f i n d i n g s show t h a t : 1. There was no s i g n i f i c a n t d i f f e r e n c e between a t h l e t e s and n o n - a t h l e t e s o f Se c ondary S c h o o l s in t h e i r academic a chievement ne ed. 2 . There was a s i g n i f i c a n t r e l a t i o n s h i p between academic and a t h l e t i c a chie v emen t s among Se c ondary S c h o o l s a t h l e t e s . 3 . There was a s i g n i f i c a n t d i f f e r e n c e between academic a chievement need and academic a chiev ement o f Secondary S ch o o l a t h l e t e s . 4 . There was no s i g n i f i c a n t d i f f e r e n c e between a t h l e t e s and n o n - a t h l e t e s o f Secondary S ch o o l in t h e i r academic a chiev ement wi th r e g a rd s t o t h e i r academic grade p o i n t s . F i n a l l y , summary, c o n c lu s i o n and recommendat ions were drawn from the t h e o r e t i c a l r e v iews o f l i t e r a t u r e and the s t a t i s t i c a l a n a l y s i s emanat ing from th e t e s t in s t r um e n t .
