This study i n v e s t i g a t e d the relative i n s t r u c t i o n a l values and effectiveness of four modes of i n s t r u c t i o n namely: Animated cartoon film, S t a t i c cartoon p i c t u r e s , Audiotape and Verbal Lecture p r e s e n t a t i o n in communicating a f o l k l o r e to c h i l d r e n i n elementary three in Zaria s c h o o l s . It was aimed at determining the mode t h a t w i l l impart more knowledge or t h a t w i l l r e s u lt in more knowledge g a i n. To achieve t h i s objective pupils in elementary t h r e e in three schools in Zaria were sampled. A research instrument was developed and used in conducting the experiment. The instruments i n c l u d e s , carefully prepared lesson, i n s t r u c t i o n al o b j e c t i v e s , objective t e s t , Animated film, S t a t ic p i c t u r e and Audiotape c a s s e t t e . The s t a t i s t i c a l design used was the p r e t e s t and p o s t t e s t which was then analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and c h a r t. vi Based on the analysis of data for t h i s study the following findings are pertinent: 1. All the four modes of instruction used for t h i s study contributed to mastery of the content. 2. In the present circumstances, animated cartoon film proved to be "better than the other modes of instruction in teaching folklore to elementary three pupils. 3. Only minor difference exist among the other three modes of instruction in terms of t h e ir i n s t r u c t i o n a l potency. The findings of t h i s study have shown that the graphic a r t i s t as a communicator has an important role to play in the educational s e t t i n g. This is so because the use of animated and s t a t ic signs to communicate ideas whether in the school setting or for social i n s t r u c t i o n is the preoccupation of the graphic a r t i s t . The general conclusion of this study therefore is that systematic effort should he made to use graphic s k i l l s and techniques to introduce more symbolism as against verbalism in our communication system.en_US
