Abstract
This project is an attempt to explore in detail the constraints of marketing
agrochemicals or pesticides in Nigeria. Pesticides are the indispensable
agricultural inputs for the control of those species or pests which include insects,
weeds, diseases, fungi and other life forms which by their action become
inimical to the interest of man. The agrochemicals sector plays a very crucial
role by providing pesticides to the Nigerian former for the efficient and effective
control of these pests so as to achieve the desired increased productivity on the
farm which will translate into more food to feed the ever-increasing population
of the country.
In this research effort has been made at reviewing the important role the
agrochemicals sector plays in the overall agricultural growth and economic
development of Nigeria. The sector which has a long history dating back to the
1940's presently has about 10 operating companies marketing over 60 different
products with an annual turnover averaging about one billion Naira. These
companies distribute these pesticides through various distribution channels to
the ultimate consumer - the farmer.
In carrying out these activities the sector faces a myriad of constraints
essentially caused by lack of a well-defined and committed government policy
and legislation on its operation. Problems of various forms that are political,
economic, social, technical, managerial and environmental in nature have
hindered the sector from getting effectively and efficiently organised to deliver
the desired level of consumer satisfaction.
Following the findings of the research, recommendations have been made on
how to get the agrochemicals sector better organised to face the challenges of
the future in contributing its quota towards making Nigeria self-sufficient in
food production for internal consumption and export.
