Abstract
The study investigated the Impact of Graphics on Academic Performance of Junior Secondary School Students in Social Studies in Jigawa State, Nigeria. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were drawn to guide the study. Related literatures were reviewed after the conceptual framework on the major variables of the study. A quasi experimental research design involving pretest and posttest was used for the study. The population consisted of 948 JSS II students. Purposive sampling technique was applied to select the samples of 214 subjects made up of 158 male and 56 female students from four intact classes to form the control and experimental groups. The instruments used for data collection were graphics media learning package (GMLP), and Social Studies Academic Performance Test (SAPT) with reliability coefficient of 0.87. Mean and Standard Deviation was used to answer the research questions, while Independent Sample Test Statistics was used to test the hypotheses using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS, version 15.0). Findings from the study revealed that: There was significant difference in the mean scores of experimental and control group in favour of the experimental group. There was significant difference in the mean scores of rural and urban students exposed to graphic instructional media and there was no significant difference in the mean scores of male and female Social Studies students exposed to graphics as a teaching - learning strategy. The study recommended among others, that graphic instructional resources should be used for teaching both concrete and abstract concepts to students at Junior Secondary School level.
