This study deals with the phamacognostic characters and anti-insect activity of Steganotaenia araliacea Hochst family umbelliferae, a family not otherwise found in tropical West Africa. This plant usually occurs as a shrub in tropical Trees. The stem bark of (his plani is used locally in insect pest control practices. The stem bark is slightly curved and breaks easily with short fractures leaving smooth surfaces. The bark was collected from the plant by making longitudenal incissions on the stem. S. araliacea selected from among ten plants used traditionally in insect pest control because of its singnificant larvicidal activity against the larva of Culex quinquefasiatus, with highest activity exhibited by the n-Hexane extract with LC50 = 6 lug/ml comparable to 5.7ug/ml of nicotine a contact insecticide A bioassay-guided chromatographic studies of the n-Hexane extract of S. araliacea reveals that the compounds responsible for activity lies in the non polar fractions. By a combination of column chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography compound "a" the substance responsible for activity was isolated. This was shown to have an appreciable activity against adult Culex quinquefasciatus with LC50 56.2ug/cm2. The compound has no growth regulating effect on all stages of C. quinquefasicatus life cycle but adults which emerged from a medium containing the compound were smaller than those from the controls. Chemical and spectroscopic studies were earned out on the active compound "a", it was found to be steroid or terpenoid. A preliminary macroscopical and microscopical examination of S. araliacea were carried out to establish phamiacognostic parameters for the identification of the plant.en_US
