Abstract
The importance of tomatoes in supplementing vitamins A and C
deficiencies in most of the developing countries can not be overemphasised.
A crucial role it plays in the economies of most
developing countries can be looked at in terms of rural employment,
source of raw material for industries and source of food for the
people. The specific problem is that of lack of information for
economic evaluation of tomato production under the small scale
irrigation in Bomo Village.
The thesis describes the small scale surface irrigation
farming system in Bomo with respect to resource use, existing
production method and output. It also determines the net farm
incoeme from tomato production and it estimates the input-output
relationship of tomato enterprise under the irrigation system.
Thirty farmers were interviewed in the study area.
The farm budget model was used to determine the net farm
income and the production function model was used in estimating the
input-output relationship. The Results showed that inputs were
relevant in explaining the variations in the output. The marginal
value product of fertilizer and irrigation labour were higher than
their marginal factor costs; while the marginal value product of
family labour was less than its marginal factor cost.
This implies that less of irrigation labour and fertilizer were
used than required at the optimum profit point. The increase in
the use of irrigation labour input will therefore result in
attainment of higher output in the study area. The farm budget
