Abstract
The purpose of the study was to experiment on the use of Velcro as a suitable fastener in the production of clothing for per-school children in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Three objectives and three research questions were formulated with three related null hypotheses. Experimental research design was adopted for the study. The population of per-school children, that is, early child care centres in Abuja was 5066 and the sample size was sixty. Purposive sampling technique was used in selection of two schools for the experiment, while random sampling technique was used for the selection of the samples. Descriptive statistics of frequency distribution and percentage were used for analyzing personal data of the respondents. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the three research questions raised in chapter one. Independent t-test was used to test null hypotheses one, two and three at 0.05% level of significance. The findings revealed that there was significant difference in the time used for wearing and undressing uniform constructed with Velcro. The time was shorter than the time used for wearing and undressing uniform constructed with button. . It was concluded that Velcro has been ascertained as an effective fastener on pre-school children garment for self dressing and undressing.
Based on the finding, it was recommended that parents should endeavour to use Velcro fastener in the openings of pre-school children garments for its suitability and convenience for the children. Headmasters and teachers of pre-school children centers should be adequately involved in encouraging the sewing of pre-school uniforms with Velcro in the openings as it will help them solve the problems of undressing and dressing of the children when they are in need of toileting
