This Thesis, A Survey of Factors Affecting Students’ Academic Performance in Christian religious Education Examination in Junior Secondary Schools in Benue State, was undertaken as a result of parents' bitter complaint and internal and external criticisms about massive failures in examinations in the state, particularly in Christian Religious Education subject. These criticisms often appear on pages of Nigerian Newspapers captioned "Falling Standards of Education in Nigerian School". It is in this perspective that the Researcher embarked on this research study to investigate why the expected results of teaching and learning Christian Religious Education in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) are not being fully realized in the lives of the students. The subjects of the study were, Teachers and students of Christian .Religious Education, in the randomly selected Junior Secondary Schools in Benue State. The main variables examined were, qualified teaching staff available in the Junior Secondary Schools, teaching methods, availability of adequate instructional materials and evaluation procedures. The variables were rated by both teachers and students of Christian Religious Education. The research instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire for both teachers and students. The JSS III result analysis for four (4) years, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994, were compared for the purpose of percentage passes and failures over the years. Four Hypothesis were formed to help interpret the data. The Statistical techniques used for the analysis and testing of the hypotheses were the tables of percentages and t-test. The major findings of the study include: Both teachers and Students claimed that majority of Junior Secondary Schools were not staffed with qualified professional CRE teachers to handle the subject effectively and most of the teachers available were NCE holders who are not academically qualified to teach at this level. The teaching methods often used by the teachers are storytelling and discussion methods. Both group of respondents claimed that instructional materials available in most Junior Secondary Schools are inadequate, especially projectors, Radio, Educational television, Tape Recorders and Video Films. Majority of the respondents claimed that most CRE teachers lack professional knowledge of using evaluation techniques in teaching-learning process. It was concluded that the factors militating against students' academic performance in Christian Religious Education examination in Benue State are, lack of qualified CRE teachers in the Junior Secondary Schools to handle the teaching of the subject effectively, lack of professional knowledge in use of varieties of teaching methods, problems of inadequate instructional materials in most Junior Secondary Schools in the state, and teachers poor knowledge of evaluation strategies and techniques in the teaching-learning process. Some recommendations were made for the State Government, School Administrators, Christian religious Education (CRE) teachers, parents and future researchers.en_US
