Abstract
Two trials were carried out (1907 dry and wet seasons)
to study the influence of nitrogen and plant population on
flowering, fruitset and subsequent yield of pepper (Capsicum
nnnuum L.) using the variety L-5962-2.
The treatments were four levels of nitrogen (0,75,150 and
300 kg/ha) and four spacings of 15, 30, 45 and 60cm between
plants within a row giving plants populations of 112500,
55200, 37500 and 20000 plants respectively. Spacing between
all the rows was 60cm.
Results showed that during the dry season increasing
nitrogen increased total number of leaves, number of leaves
at first flowering, total percentage of fruits and percent
fruitset, while number of flower buds aborted before anthesis
decreased. During the same season, increasing plant
population increased plant height and number of days to first
flowering while percentage of flower buds aborted before
anthesis decreased.
The wet season trial showed an increase in number of
branches at maturity, number of leaves at first flowering,
number of days to first flowering, and fruit per plant yield
with increasing nitrogen and plant population. Number of
flower buds aborted before anthesis, however decreased with
the increase in plant population and nitrogen.
There were positive correlations between yield and such
characters as total number of leaves and number of leaves
at first flowering, number of branches, number of days to
first fruitset, percent fruitset and total number of fruits,
while percentage of flowers aborted before and after anthesis were negatively correlated with yield.
