Abstract
A hospital is an integral part of a social and medical organisation, the function of which is to provide for the population, complete health care both curative and preventive and outpatient services reach out to the family and its home environment. From the modern point of view, the hospital is not only for treatment of the sick but a comprehensive system of preventive and curative medicine and also devoted to ambulatory and domiciliary cases. The General hospital is one that is organised to deal with a variety of conditions of illness needing specialised skills or equipment that cannot economically be provided in the patients home or in small medical centres in the community. It brings together in a concentrated form most of the specialist services and it provides care for both impatient and out patients. Hospital esthetics cannot be dealt with in the spirit of mere decorative embellishment. In good hospital architecture, the esthetic and the function unite to contribute to the well being of both patient and staff. The esthetic, then is also a function of the hospital. Base on this the contiguity approach is being adopted. As a contribution to architecture, the design thesis is vii concerned at improving the circulation pattern which is a very important factor in a hospital, by having various units working in conduction to accelerate the services needed with adequate provision for natural lighting and ventilation to reduce infestation and for maximum comfort. The main sections of the hospital are classified into two, these are: OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT and INPATIENT. Departments of the above include Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pathology, Radiology and ENT (ear, nose and throat). On the macro level the master plan consist of the main hospital, auxilliary services, medical school, Doctors1 residence, students' hostels, etc.
