Abstract
The financing of agricultural development in Nigeria has all along been given priority especially in all the nations development plans. A substantial part of the nation's resources have been allocated to important sectors. Unfortunately, despite all these efforts, agricultural production has remained low. This study therefore focuses on the desire to investigate the real problems behind this unfortunate development. It examines the extent to which agricultural financing institutions particularly the NACB have contributed towards agricultural financing in Nigeria. In carrying out the investigation, the study made use of data from both primary and secondary sources. The data collected were analyzed using percentages, simple averages and descriptive research methods. Inspite of heavy investment in the sector by agricultural finance institutions, the study discovered some of the problems that contributed to low agricultural production as; delay in the disbursement of funds to farmers, diversion of loans meant for farming to other uses, and lack of proper monitoring and appraisal of loan applications by agricultural finance institutions. This often results in huge bad debt losses and increasing cases of litigation by the bank.
