Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the teaching of social studies with regard to teaching methods the subject of social studies in Ahmadu Bello University Staff Primary Schools. The questionnaire were designed for teachers and pupils. The questionnaires were administered to pupil's in primary six and their teachers in the schools of Ahmadu Bello University. Out of thirteen questionnaires meant for teachers ten were returned duly completed by the respondents. While pupils questionnaires which totaled 300 only 270 were returned fully completed. The responses thus received were statistically analyzed to answer the research questions. The data analysis revealed the following: i. Pupils hold positive altitudes towards social studies, ii. The majority of social studies teachers were NCE holders, iii. Discussion, Questioning, project, Excursion and activity frequently used methods employed by teachers in the teaching of social studies, iv. Almost all the pupils have more favorable altitudes towards social studies. In the light of the findings, a few recommendations were given as social studies, teachers should be made to attend in-service training program-mes to upgrade their qualification. Teachers were advised to use more improvised teaching aids rather than relying much on the imported ones. The teaching in Social studies, inquiry and discovery methods should be emphasized and employed in the teaching of social studies.
