dc.description.abstract | One thousand six hundred and forty three primary and post-primary school g i r l s in Oyo and Zaria areas of Nigeria were studied to determine GUIDANCE SERVICES available to them. The main objective of the study is to compare GUIDANCE SERVICES available to girls in Zaria Division of the North Central State with those of Oyo Divisions of the Western State of Nigeria, The data and information for the study have been collected by using questionnaires, library f a c i l i t i e s , personal interviews and observations, reports, studies and educational s t a t i s t i c s in the two areas. The study has revealed: ( i ) that there are very limited guidance personnel to man GUIDANCE SERVICES in our schools, ( i i ) that the time provided for GUIDANCE SERVICES (where they are rendered) are inadequate, ( i i i ) that GUIDANCE SERVICES are not reaching the girls especially those who need educational and vocational counselling. Lack of these services are contributing to the high dropouts rates of g i r l s in schools, and (iv) that i l l i t e r a t e parents unlike literate parents are sceptical about sending their daughters to schools. One could conclude from the study that: (a) the implementation and improvement of GUIDANCE i SERVICES in our schools demand the concern and a t t e n t i o n of both the people and the government of Nigeria and (b) GUIDANCE SERVICES are necessary in Nigerian School i | en_US |
