Abstract
This thesis is entittled, "Structure and
Growth of the Civil Service in Nigeria: A case
Study of Bauchi State 1976 - 1984". The work is
made up of four chapters. As the topic implies,
the main aim of the study is to find out the effects
of the structure and size of the state civil service
on its performance. It also attempts to find out:-
(a) the rate, trend as well as pattern of the
growth of the service from 1976 - 1984;
(b) the ways in which the organizational structure
of the service facilitates or hinders the
achievement of government objectives;
(c) whether the service has witnessed rapid growth;
and if so, whether such growth has resulted in
disproportionate span of control;
(d) the relationship between increase in the size
of the civil service and annual budgetary
expenditure over the nine year period with a
view of finding out whether or not the civil
service has become a self-serving institution;
(e) whether or not there exists healthy working
relationship between the various classes of
the service; and
(f) the extent and effects of the last retrenchment
exercise.
