dc.description.abstractThis project work is concerned with the determination of the role of investment in economic development of Nigeria, while New Nigeria Development Company Limited (NNDC) was used as a case study. NNDC incorporated in 1949 is a development finance institution jointly owned by the sixteen (16) Northern States with their equity ownership varying in different proportions. The company is based in Kaduna and its subsidiaries in other member states, and also with investment in various sectors and subsectors of the economy throughout the country. The study revealed the role of investment as a catalyst in the development process, which is associated to its interactive effect on income, saving and further capital accumulation. It is observed that the acquisition of industries lead to increased per capita income, reduction in unemployment, economic inequality and absolute poverty. Therefore the role of investment in economic development was viewed from the perspective of industrialization. In this regard, the study discovered that NNDC made significant contributions to the development of Nigeria economy with respect to its investment activities, provision of employment, development of human resources and advancing loans to other companies directly or by guarantee. However, some shortcomings were observed in the NNDC operations and recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.en_US
