dc.description.abstract | The researcher made on evaluative study of book charging systems used in the main libraries of thirteen Nigerian University Libraries. The major strengths and weaknesses of each of the systems were pointed out and some modifications made to counter the weaknesses were also noted. The study revealed that the Straightforward Browne System was the most widely used one while the Reverse Browne System was the least used one. The study also revealed the importance of human element (devoted and disciplined staff) in the satisfactory working of each system. Time study and cost survey of the systems were looked into and the researcher concluded that the Newark System was fastest to operate in terms of registering, etc. while the Straightforward Browne as used at Ibadan was the slowest. It was also discovered that the Slips System is the cheapest to use in terms of initial costs of equipment, etc. while the Newark and Bookamatic Systems are more expensive in terms of initial costs and operating expenses. | en_US |
