Abstract
The purpose of this study was to trace, examine, evaluate
and document the evolution of musical scenery in Nigerian
Television Jos, from 197 3 to 1989 in order to give its
historical account. This was inspired from the fact that
researchers have for long time neglected scenery (stage design)
as a field of inquiry. The study of scenery seems to have been
abandoned to playwrights and T.V programme producers, but this
failure to grasp its essence has made researchers to undertake a
renewed interest in the field. Scenery, as described by Selden
and Sellman (1959), is one of the art components of the theatre,
simply defined as the environment for and dramatic action.
The technique employed for data collection includes,
participant observation, reviewing various documents such as
minutes of production meetings, photographs, scenic furnishings,
scenic constructed pieces (set pieces), backdrops, video tape
recordings and textbooks which form the primary sources of data.
The open-ended interviewing method was also employed in order to
obtain information from the respondents own frame of reference.
The data obtained was categorised into the following
groups: descriptive, personal documents, field notes,
photographs, people’s own words and official documents and
other artifacts.
The "process coding" system suggested by Bogdan and Biklen
(1982) was used for data analysis. This coding system refers to
coding words, phrases, sequences of events, changes
