This study was undertaken to investigate the differential e f f e c t s of part-vs-whole method of presentation of a text for information processing and immediate and l a t e r r e c a l l. The sample of the study came from the parent population of f i r s t year N.C.E. students of the Advanced Teachers' College, Zaria. From a total of 307 students of the f i r s t year, the investigator randomly obtained five groups of 50 subjects (n = 50 each), the total sample being 250 ( N = 250). The text consisting of 420 words on the psychology of motivation was selected from a text book of Educational Psychology (Kukberjee, 1978). The design of the experiment ensured controls by using the foliowing treatments: (a) the text was played through the auditory modality of sensation by playing the text pre-recorded on five different cassettes for five different methods of part-VS—whole presentation, (b) the speed of recording being 84 words per minute, (c) the tapes were played back on the same pitch for every group, and (d) the five groups A, B, C, D and E received respectively five treatments such as a, b, c, d and e. The retention a b i l i t y of the subjects was measured by administering an objective text, for immediate recall, and there was later recall after a period of three weeks. The scoring was objective as correct answers were assigned 1, mistakes being ignored. The data was subjected to statistic analysis using the University Computer with the aid of SPSS Programme of Analysis of Variance. Analysis of data revealed that the groups differed significantly from one another in their mean recall scores and their later retention scores. On the basis of the above significant results the null hypothesis of this study was rejected and i t s alternative hypothesis was supported. The dissertation ends with some discussion of the issues highlighted in this study.en_US
