Abstract
The focus of this work is on r venue gene ration and local government performance in Nigeria. Given this objective, i t was hypothesis zed that: -The level of finacial autonomy gr anted to local government s and their weak revenue generating capacity, have greatly affected the development of the grassroots; The state and local gove rnment joint acc ount has e f f ective ly er oded any le vel of independence f or loc al government there by obs truc t ing its r ole as a tool f or de velopment in Nigeria; the nature of intergove rnmental re lations in Niger ia, has greatly af f ected the leve l of pe rf ormance of local governme nt. Documentar y research and surve y me thod were employed in data c ol lec tion and the three hypotheses tes ted and de veloped. The major f inding theref ore is that lack of Revenue gene rating ef f or t in Local Government af f ects it s perf ormance. It was theref ore c onc luded that the re cannot be a viri le and dynamic local government system without ensuring that the function assigned to local governments are properly aligned with tax arising powers or physical jurisdiction and that designated re venue rights are guaranteed and adequately protected. The study however recommended that there should be a review of the function of each l eve l of government there is the need to give the local government a larger share of the federation account , the re should be power to raise revenue and incur expenditure and of is all discipline in terms of revenue effort and accountability should be oder to
