Abstract
The study was designed to examine "the Impact of the Millennium Development Goals
training on the teaching performance of basic Social Studies Education teachers in Katsina
state" It considered two research questions and two hypotheses which bordered on the
difference in the performance of Social Studies Education teachers exposed to the MDGs
training workshop and those who were not exposed to it, as well as the difference in the
academic performance of the pupils taught by teachers exposed to the MDGs' training
workshop and those who were not. Three hundred and eighty one (381) primary four pupils
and three hundred and sixty one (361) teachers were selected from the ten (10) local
government areas of the state. The researcher used achievement test for pupils while
questionnaire was administered to the teachers. In dependent t-test sample statistics was
used. The result revealed significant difference in the academic performance of primary
school pupils between those taught by MDGs teachers and their counterparts taught by
teachers who did not attend the MDGs programme . The teachers exposed to the MDGs
training programme had significantly higher teaching performance than their counterparts
that were not exposed to the MDGs training programme. The second null hypothesis which
stated that there is no significant difference in the academic performance of pupils taught
by MDGS teachers and those not taught by MDGS teachers was rejected. Some of the
recommendations, include: certificates should be awarded to teachers who participate in the
MDGs programme. Interactive programme in form of seminars and workshops should be
organized for teachers to enable them acquire the pedagogical disposition for implementing
the UBE curriculum. Follow up activities should be introduced to ensure that what the
teachers learnt at the workshops were implemented in the classroom.
