Abstract
The research outlined the historical background of the State, also issues regarding starting
and ending of fasting, and uniform date of commencement of ‘Id prayers were also
stressed in this work. The work pointed out forces that led to the division among the
Muslim Ummah in the State on the issues related to Moon Sighting, and the ways to
solve such division and the existing problems were also identified. Likewise, the methods
for determining the new Moon according to Islamic law, contradictory opinions of
scholars, basis for disagreement by some Muslims in the State and the divergent views of
scholars regarding the Moon rising position (Matla’i) were also reviewed. The work also
covered the activities of the Moon Sighting Committee, their activities and the challenges
facing it have been outlined. It further highlighted the effort of Zamfara State
Government, Scholars and Traditional Rulers. The research confirmed the impact of
Moon Sighting Committee on the Muslim Ummah in the State, especially on the issues of
Moon Sighting in the month of Sha’ban, Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhul-Hajj.The study
also confirmed that, majority of those who refused to commence fast and ‘Id prayers with
the main body of the Muslims are Islahuddin, Qadiriyyah Sufi Order and some few
among the neutral Muslims. The work offered some suggestions on how to solve the
problems of moon sighting in Zamfara state.
