Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine “Relationship between Entry Grades in
Mathematics and Students Performance in Financial Accounting in Federal
Colleges of Education in Nigeria”. Correlation design was used for the study. As a
guide to the researcher, five research questions and five Null hypotheses were raised.
The population of the selected students in 10 Federal Colleges of Education offering
Accounting option stood at 655 and the sample size was 270. Random sampling
technique was employed. Descriptive statistics of frequency distribution, percentages,
mean scores and range were used for analysing personal data as well as answering the
five research questions raised. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to test the
null hypotheses one and two. Linear Regression was adopted for test of null hypothesis
three and Z-test analysis was used for test to null hypotheses four and five at 0.05 level of
significance. The findings revealed among others that there was significant relationship
between students’ entry grades in mathematics and their ability of solving problems in
Financial Accounting within a stipulated time in Federal Colleges of Education in Nigeria;
to this end the Null hypothesis one was rejected. The study further revealed that there was
significant relationship between students’ entry grades in mathematics and their
performance in Financial Accounting in Federal College of Education in Nigeria. On this
ground the hypothesis was also rejected. The result of Null hypothesis three indicated that
difference exists between the Male and Female entry grades in Mathematics and their
performance in Financial Accounting in Federal Colleges of Education in Nigeria, to
this end the null hypothesis was retained. In view of the findings the study recommended
among others that Orientation programs should be mounted to enlighten the secondary
school students on the need to develop interest in mathematics, because it will provide
them with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities that will enable them to cope up
with further educational challenges.
