Abstract
ABSTRACT
The seasonal variation in the concentration of Pb, Fe, Mn, Cd, Cr, Ni, Co and organic
contaminant such as Buthylated hydroxytoluene, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, methylester,
fluorouracil, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono (2ethyl hexyl) ester, ethylbenzene and
xylene were determined in the dumpsite soil, incinerator ash, and food crops (tomatoes,
guava banana, cassava, potatoes and mango) grown within the vicinity of the dumpsite at a
University Teaching Hospital. AAS was used for the heavy metal analysis which indicated
the order of relative abundance as Fe>Pb>Mn>Cr>Cd>Co>Ni for both seasons while GC/MS
was used for the organic contaminant determination. Analysis of variance with t-test showed
no significant difference for the metal level within the study area for both season. The levels
of these metals and organic contaminants in all the sources and food crops were within
tolerable limit. The result also showed that the hospital waste dumpsite and incinerator ash
are major sources of these metals and organic contaminants in the food crops.
