Abstract
Nigeria has witnessed various changes in the economy. It has also witnessed the transition from colonial rule to independence and self government. Our economy set ups and the new world economic order and realities. Petroleum has an overwhelming impact on the history of Nigeria over the past three decades. It tois held great promise for Nigeria, its potentials for positive contributions to our development as a modern economy are still enormous. From 1971 - 76 the government acquired a lot from petroleum production and its sole in the economy because more prominent because petroleum began to gain more ascendancy among Nigeria's agricultural and mineral resources. The period referred to as oil boom era was the beginning of Nigerias over dependence on petroleum production, since then the oil became the major source of foreign exchange earning and government revenues. It also constituted a great share in the nations gross domestic product, the nation at that time recorded an unprecedented rate of economic growth.
