Abstract
ABSTRACT. The Ngolong Ngas' Palace (ie, the paramount chief in Ngasland's Palace) is a representation of Palace designs in Ngasland and Ngas traditional architecture as a whole in modern terms, with conventional building materials and methods of construction. In order to achieve this goal researches involving case studies and data collection are made and reported in five chapters which are further grouped into three main parts, forming this thesis. The first part is made of chapters one and two, and it deals with the historical background and the way of life of the Ngas that is their origin, settlement portterns, Religion, socio-economic structures e.t.c. It went further to discuss Chieftaincy institution in Ngasland that is their traditional council, Duties of traditional title holders, Judicial functions e.t.c. Chapters three and four constitute the second part. This part is on the Ngas traditional architecture, - the materials, methods of construction, planning concepts e.t.c. It also analyses the case studies carried out from which conclusions and criticisms are drawn; and discussed how the Ngas 'builder' combats the climatic discomforts associated with the location of Ngasland, in his buildings. The last part is a combination of Chapter five and the conclusion. It discusses about the design aspect of thesis, that is concept evolution which is based mainly on Ngas traditional architecture, design brief, schedule of accomodation; and a final Conclusion.
