Abstract
Trading forms one of the most basic economic activity engaged
the majority of the urban populace in Nigeria. Even a great
number of workers, with white-collar jobs, find time and engages
in trading in one form or another. This is of course to
supplement their earnings from their salaries which cannot even
cover their needs. Trading and commercial activities takes
place best in the market.
However, most of our markets are inadequate and have hitherto
received very little attention, yet they provide employment for
the overwhelming majority of the urban population in our towns
and cities. That is why on a typical visit into market places
where the trading activities are carried out, which is more
important to the majority of the population than supermarkets or
departmental stores, one is evidently confronted by many problems
like, congestion, inadequate space requirement, improper
circulation lack of orderliness, health harzard, poor sanitary
service and high risk of fire incidence.
This study is centred on a satellite market - Katako Marketplace-
which is. located at Laranto Quarters at the Northern part
of Jos Town. The study deals with a programme of investigations
on effective retail space requirements, fire precaution measures,
effective storm water drainage and proper adequate traffic
