Abstract
An experiment on the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus
fertilizers and farmyard manure on growth and yield of a local
garden egg (Solanum qilo) variety 'Samaru Striped', was
conducted under rainfed conditions in 1983/84 at the
Horticultural Unit of Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria.
Three levels of each of the nutrients (Nitrogen - 0, 75
and 150 kg/ha; Phosphorus - 0, 30 and 60 kg/ha and Farmyard
manure - 0, 10 and 20 t/ha) were applied. The investigation
revealed that each of the nutrients improved both the
vegetative growth and fruit yield. Nitrogen application
remarkably increased plant height, number of branches, number
of leaves, leaf area index, total dry matter production
and number of fruits per plant,, Total yield per hectare
increased significantly with each increased application of
nitrogen up to 150 kg/ha, at which 39.44 t of fruits were
producedo However, the optimum level of nitrogen application
for optimum yield was 143 kg/ha.
Only application of up to 60 kg P2O5_/ha significantly
increased yield. This produced about 35.22 t/ha of fruitS.
A positive linear response between yield and farmyard manure
application was shown. Each level significantly increased
fruit yield; 20 t/ha produced 35.95 t of fruits.
The interdependency of the nutrients in improving yield
was quite evident. The highest fruit yield was obtained by
a combination of the highest levels of N, P and Farmyard
manure. Neither the nutrients, nor their interactions
significantly influenced the crude protein content of the
fruits.
A highly significant positive correlation was found
between yield and vegetative growth characters. The number
of days to flowering was, however, not significantly
correlated with yield..
