Abstract
ABSTRACT The Primary Education Improvement Programme (Science) took off in 1970. Three teachers guides entitled Primary Science one, two and three including work books for children had been written by 1978. No evaluative study of the programme was made in Jalingo Local Government area of Gongola State. This study investigated the availability of books and other instructional materials and the attendance of teachers at training sessions designed to acquaint them with the programme. It also investigated the performance of project and non-project school children on a test of process skills. Two instruments were used to collect data in the study. They are: A questionnaire for teachers and a process test instrument for children. The results indicated that most of the teachers were improperly trained for the programme. The result also indicated that children attending the PEIP Project schools did not perform better than xii children in non-project schools. It was recommended that teacher training be carried out at the curriculum development centre of the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University Improper training of teachers seemed to be the limiting factor to the success of the programme.
